This piece is absolutely lovely. And it is a great piece to work with an intermediate student on compound time signatures. The eighth notes in the RH melody make it so easy to “feel” the 5/4 measures. I think that after learning this piece, that students will be compelled to experiment with tempo. How does this piece feel when I play it slowly, as compared to when I play it quickly, for example, because time sometimes seems to be moving by quite quickly, or in other cases quite slowly.

This piece is fun. It is mostly in 5/8 with a few changes to 4/4 and 6/8. These rhythmical changes along with the asymmetrical 5/8 rhythm gives the piece energy and appeal.

I love the rhythms of this piece – the title is exactly right for the music.

Looking forward to trying this with some of my older pupils. Don’t be put off by the digital piano recording on the website – they never do the music justice!

Looking forward to learning this myself before I run it by students. Compound meters can be a challenge but this one has a good flow to it. thanks again for your generosity in sharing!

I assigned this piece to a student looking for challenging and appealing repertoire. She loves the rhythmic power of the piece and is going to play it at her school talent show, along with a few other pieces that I have given her from this site.

I gave this piece to a student who loves picking apart the maths in music as she hadn’t played a piece in 5/8 before, and as expected she loved it! We had great fun coming up with words about wheels to fit in with the unusual rhythms. We have also had fun using the bass line as a starting point for our own improvisations. Thank you for such a fun piece!
