This piece seems to grow on me after repeated hearings – and playings. As a composer myself, it is one of those that I wish I had written myself. It is hard to categorize; Cobb describes it as jazz, and perhaps it is – in the American “big band” sense. I am reminded of the old 78 rpm recordings of Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, and the opening chordal sweep is reminiscent of their saxophone-heavy sound – what we Americans call “schmaltzy”. The parallel added-sixth chords give the piece a richness reminiscent of the Debussy Sarabande – but less difficult, since it is all on the white keys.

I think this piece would be a hit with adult pianists as well. Some have remarked that they have used this as a church offertory, and I can see that as a possibility. Equal in its inspiration and its workmanship, it will stay in the minds and hearts of those who play it.

I hope we are treated to more work in this style.
