Daily Expressions, vol 1 (2014)
for piano by Paul Birchall are seven compositions for Intermediate level students. An interesting fact is that Paul wrote one new piece each day for one month and seven of them were included in this brand new sheet music publication. Paul described the process of composing as: ‘I would conceive a theme very quickly and then develop it into a complete piece.’ He notes, that although he did not make a conscious decision to compose according to his mood, his state of mind would inevitably influence his work. He also, observes that sometimes a brighter more optimistic theme came on a day where he would find himself in a low mood, under stress or both. Some editing took place before submitting for publishing, but the pieces essentially remain as they were originally conceived. The tempo markings are just a guide and you should feel free to enjoy them at whatever speed you like.

Hauntingly beautiful. Contemplative and soothing with lovely harmonic undertones.

‘Daily Expressions’ are written by British composer Paul Birchall. They are suitable for Grade 5 level upwards, and could be described as mood music, verging on Minimalist. Paul wrote one new piece everyday for a month, then included seven of the compositions in this new volume. Students will enjoy the various ‘moods’ conjured by the different feel depending on the days of the week. Perfect for those who want to play modern pieces without a strictly Classical edge. You can listen to a sample of each work and purchase them this website. Full review here

Congrats on publishing a truly great new collection of intermediate works! I am very excited to share Paul Birchall’s collection with my students. The pieces are accessible and fun, and foster real musicality in the player. So much of the music for intermediate players is either too dull or too sappy. These works are neither. I enjoy teaching them as much as my students enjoy playing them.

I must admit I bought this collection for myself as all my students are beginners and not quite up to it yet. However I can see that it will spark the interest of some of them in the near future! The tunes are simple but absolutely lovely. I can’t wait to bring some of them into my studio!
