RENOIR Prelude Nr.1 – The Luncheon of the Boating Party The music captures the idyllic scene of ‘The Luncheon of the Boating Party’, of friends sharing food, wine, and conversation on a balcony overlooking the Seine. The expressive melodic lines and piquant harmonies suggest a convivial and carefree atmosphere. DEGAS Prelude Nr.2 – Ballerinas The movements and costumes of ballerinas were always a fascination for Degas, and he painted them many times. In this lively piece, which is underpinned by a swing rhythm, the pianist’s hands become the dancers and move in an agile and dynamic manner across the keys. MORISOT Prelude Nr.3 – Julie Daydreaming Julie was Berthe Morisot’s daughter, and in one of Morisot’s paintings she poses a 16 year old Julie daydreaming and gazing into the distance. A wistful slow waltz is the central part of this musical reverie, framed by passages of charm and delicacy. MONET Prelude Nr.4 – The Gardens at Giverny The gardens that Monet created at Giverny were an inspiration for his art, and the rippling textures of the music echo his fascination with light and colour. Slow changing harmonies become reflections in water, whilst rapidly shifting motifs suggest the ephemeral aspects of nature. MANET Prelude Nr.5 – At the Folie-Bergère The Folie-Bergère was one of the most prominent music halls in Paris and the scene of one of Manet’s most famous paintings. The music bustles with animation, contrasting improvisatory passages with catchy melodies. | |
