NEW COMPOSER ON THE BLOCK
‘HOORAY, we have a new composer of Jazzy piano pieces for young pianists!’ – announced the UK magazine ‘Music Teacher’ in September 2013.
Hello, I am Elena Cobb and welcome to my site! I am often asked: ‘What is Higgledy Piggledy Jazz, and how does it work?’ The philosophy behind the concept is very simple - I want kids to feel like stars!
WHO ARE THESE BOOKS FOR?
‘The pieces (ten in each book) are aimed at young pianists who are around Grade 1-4 standard, but often sound harder – what WE ALL SECRETLY LOVE.’ (Music Teacher magazine, UK) This goes for all three books in the series; Higgledy Piggledy Jazz Piano with a play-along CD, Higgledy Piggledy Jazz Alto Saxophone with a play-along CD and Higgledy Piggledy Jazz Classical Guitar Ensemble. The best part is that all three books are musically interactive, so you can easily put together a band in your school, studio, or at home! How great is that? ‘Blue River’ for piano is a ‘spin off’ from Higgledy Piggledy Jazz for piano. ‘International Piano’ magazine wrote in their review (October 2013) that ‘This is a hugely enjoyable collection of six original, well crafted and highly accessible pieces for grade 6+ players in need of some light-hearted pianistic relief.’ Why not try one of my pieces for a competition, GCSE exam, or concert?
IMPROVISATION FOR CLASSICALLY TRAINED NEED NOT BE SCARY!
I know too well how scary it is to step away from the safety of the musical sheet and to burst into spontaneous improvisation. Please do not panic! Instead, think about having a go. My music is written for classically trained teachers and pupils in mind, and those who are keen to try. Sections for improvisation with simple suggestions are added in several pieces. These offer great opportunities to break away from the mould. The bass clef is coloured to match three chords in the twelve bar blues. So, take a deep breath and go for it, what you have got to lose?
